Fishing is not everybody’s cup of tea, however, mainly it is because of lack of knowledge and not realizing that it could be fun and be a family sport. “The best chance of catching fish is when the line is in the water,” said Rohan Botha, owner of Uvuvi Fishing. Rohan, husband to Jeandré and father to Declan, speaks 4 languages: Afrikaans, English, Zulu and Swahili. He is also a qualified field guide with many years’ experience. He has more than 20 years’ experience of fishing and it is a passion like none other.
Where is Uvuvi Fishing situated? – Uvuvi (Swahili for fishing) Fishing is located on Main Road, Sabie, Mpumalanga, directly opposite Caltex.
Why Uvuvi Fishing? – Uvuvi Fishing offers affordable fishing solutions for all generations. The products on offer have been selected for their affordability and quality. Uvuvi Fishing’s focus is to promote the sport of fishing to all generations, but especially the younger generations as they are the future of the sport. “Without the younger generation we will have no one fighting for the sport and more especially the conservation of our natural resources and the beauty that encompasses the areas that we get to fish,” said Rohan.
Where does the fishing take place? – It is where the Horse Shoe and Lone Creek streams meet just 9km outside the town of Sabie, that the Sabie Trout Angling Club has for the past 50 years successfully managed and controlled approximately 8km of fine trout fishing waters – considered by many a fly fisher to be the best river fishing venue in Mpumalanga. Beginners and seasoned anglers alike will find the fishing on offer to be a great challenge and are guaranteed a pleasant experience as only the best of nature is served here.
So where do you start? Upon visiting Uvuvi Fishing to purchase a permit, fly fishers will be supplied with a map of the club waters (at a nominal fee) bearing pool names such as Deep Pool, Jacob’s Pool, Poacher’s Pool, as well as many more – all producers of fine fish. In these waters, you can catch trout and the endemic Incomati Chiselmouth. Everything necessary for a tourist/visitor (even a first-time angler) is available at Uvuvi Fishing. You will find rods, reels, custom tied flies and other accessories, as well as guidance and practical advice on how to do fly fishing at Uvuvi Fishing.
Catch and release? Catch and release is a practice promoted at the club on this river, provided it is done with utmost caution and following catch-and-release codes of conduct. Popular pools are well marked and bank clearing is done regularly, however, anglers must bear in mind that river fishing maintains its natural obstacles and a good day’s fishing will require that extra dedication. – (some info from Sabie- Source of Surprise)
