The bottled water industry has become highly competitive in South Africa. What, if anything, differentiates one supplier from another? “I believe what sets one bottled water company apart from the others is, to offer clients the best quality of water at an affordable price combined with excellent customer service,” says Reynette van der Walt, co-owner of Crystal Water in Hazyview.

Crystal Water products is not just purified water but it is an exceptionally, high quality, natural water from a Kiepersol farm in Hazyview. The farm and its water plant is run by co-owner of Crystal Water, Agnesia Venter, where the water is tested every six months in order to meet the highest quality standards.

“We have more and more tourist coaches from Johannesburg stopping on route to purchase our bottled water,” continues Van Der Walt. “Originally the coaches purchased cases of 500ml water bottles for their tourists in Johannesburg before their tour departure to the Lowveld. However, the coach operators found that the bottles were only half drunk which according to their tourists was due to the taste of the water.”

“One of the most important aspects of bottled water that clients should realise is that the bottles have a limited lifespan,” explains Van Der Walt. “As the plastic bottle gets older it releases gases which can affect the taste of the water contained within it. Generally, a five litre bottle should be replaced after the seventh refill with water. Another tip the public should know about bottled water is, that it is dangerous to drink the water from a bottled water which has been left standing in a vehicle for an extended period of time as it will be exposed to high temperatures. Once again this is due to the gasses released by the plastic due to overheating. Do not drink that water but rather use it to water your plants.”

Van der Walt and her husband, Pieter, originally came from the Free State where they were dairy farmers. As a result of the severe impact that the drought had on farming in that region, the family including son, Drikus, and daughter, Liandri, moved to Hazyview towards the end of 2015.

“I enjoy the interaction that I have on a daily basis with clients, immensely. Customer service is my top priority. We sell and deliver bottled water in 500ml, 750ml , one litre, 1,5 litre and five litre containers. We also personalise labels on our bottled water for weddings and functions.”
