SABIE BOWLING CLUB SURVIVES YET ANOTHER “CHALLENGE!”

News Desk

“After all the challenges which Sabie Bowling Club has had to face over the past twelve months, the holding of their annual Sabie Challenge Tournament was really “A walk in the Park”!

Times are tough, we all know that, so sponsors are much harder to find, thus we went ahead with the Sabie Challenge on our own, determined that it would be the usual enjoyable and successful event that it has always been when Sabie Spar has been behind us.

We surmounted the next hurdle, when Nelspruit Bowling Club moved their annual “Jock of the Bushveld” competition from August, to clash with our planned date of March 21, 2021. We graciously stepped aside and decided that Monday, March 22 would be just as good.

And so it proved, as 36 Lawn Bowlers, some from as far afield as Pretoria, Groblersdal, Waterval Boven and Lydenburg arrived to join the locals from Nelspruit, White River and Sabie Bowling Clubs.

The weather forecast was not the best we had ever seen, but we started the first of our two games of 15 ends each, on time, at 10 am on Monday, March 22. We broke for a most delicious lunch, totally organised by our very few, but most competent Ladies, and then held a Spider in aid of a local Charity, which raised just under R500, a Group Photograph to help commemorate the day for posterity. Into the second, eagerly awaited game of Bowls, which pitted strength against strength, based on the results of the first round of matches. The weather also played ball, and we had just a small amount of rain, which did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of our Bowlers old and new.

Just before 16:30, we all retired upstairs, to our beautifully decorated Bowls room, to enjoy a well-deserved drink or two, as well as each other’s company, buy a few more raffle tickets, and await Prize-giving.

The outcome of the Spar Challenge showed that the Team of Johnny Desmore, Merle Joubert and total rookie Alwyn Victor, wearing the Wayfarers shirts had prevailed, ahead of the team from Nelspruit who were a single point ahead of Family Ferreira from far off Waterval Boven in the purple livery. What was so satisfying about the entire competition was the fact that not only did such almost total beginners play, and finish in the top four places, but that we had a full Green of bowlers from far and wide, including Elaine and Katinka from Groblersdal Bowling Club, two very gracious ladies with lots of experience of Lawn Bowls, both playing and in administration.

Thanks to Soapreme Clean and Sabie Spar for some prizes, and Sabie Stationers for your help with all the printing, and to all our Sabie members who assisted and contributed, one way or another, to a most wonderful day of sport, fun and friendship.”
