THE “BALL & CHAIN TOURNAMENT” MOVES TO WHITE RIVER BOWLING CLUB

After having been held successfully since its inception in 2014 at Sabie Bowls Club, the popular Valentine’s Day Mixed Pairs Competition was hosted by White River on February 13, 2021.

Despite another gloomy and depressing weather forecast, the 18 teams arrived Saturday morning, mostly dressed for the occasion in various shades of pink and blue. The first games, of 15 Ends, were underway just after 09:30, and continued, without interruption until the luncheon break.

The odd shower did nothing to deter the bowlers from the local club, augmented by players from Nelspruit, Sabie, Waterval Boven and Lynnwood in Pretoria.

After lunch, under very threatening skies, a group photograph was very rapidly followed by a “Spider” to raise funds for CANSA, and before you could catch your breath, the second match was in full swing.

The sun came out, and humidity levels rose rapidly, as the assortment of Husband and Wife, Boyfriend and Girlfriend teams went hammer and tongs in an all-out attempt to win one of the many attractive prizes which were available!

The games were completed without any interference from the weather, and so we all retired to the clubhouse to whet our thirsts, and buy more raffle tickets, chat with our opposition and eagerly await the outcome of our endeavours, and the ensuing prize giving.

The format of the competition ensured that all teams scored points as they went along, and also guaranteed a close-run affair. The visitors from Lynwood, Jacques and Ardine, were the recipients of the Sportsman’s Prize, in 18th Place with 10 points. In third place was the White River and Waterval Boven combination of Adri Lockhurst and Johnny Desmore, and then the nail biter! The top two teams had each amassed 36 points from a possible 50, and each had an identical Shot Difference of “plus 16”, so out came the calculators, to find that Lood van Rooyen and Minnie Theron, had just pipped the Sponsors of the Tournament, Merle Joubert and Chris Colverd by a very narrow margin!

A great ambience prevailed at the Club throughout the day, we are very grateful to the White River Committee for accommodating us, and thanks to Kim Tilly and her helpers for the delicious food and Keith “Stretch” Robertson and Bonkhosi for the great Greens, and both stepping in to play at the very last minute when one of the teams got lost in the mist!
