A very successful Buco Charity Golf Competition was held at the scenic Pilgrim’s Rest golf course on February 29th. The competition was held in aid of junior golf development.
Despite the cold and threatening rain, 64 players from across the Lowveld teed off early in the morning to complete 18 holes of golf. At the end of the day, they were treated to a spit braai before the official prize giving. The prizes were sponsored by Buco and some of their suppliers. Further funds were raised through various fines and also an auction of two 3-night weekends sponsored by Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge which raised R7 000.
The winning team of the day were Millex Motubatse, from White River, and Rodney Mokoena, from Pilgrim’s Rest. Mokoena also won prizes for the longest drive and in a fund-raising chipping competition. Petro Swart won both the ladies prizes for nearest to the pin and the longest drive. There was also a fun prize for the best-dressed “couple”, which was won by George Jenkins, Mine Manager of Transvaal Gold Mining Estates and Nico Grobler.
The funds raised will go towards a tour to the South Coast for eight promising junior golfers who are still in high school – six from Sabie and two from Pilgrim’s Rest. Besides having the opportunity to swim in the sea, the youngsters will be playing golf on four different courses along the coast, exposing them to top-rated 18-hole golf courses.
