Coronavirus Protective Measures

Michele du Plessis

There are certain precautions that you can take to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, such as COVID-19.

Continue practising hand hygiene and cough etiquette, and adhere to the following:

  • Avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections.
  • Practice frequent hand-washing, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment.
  • Avoid visiting markets where live animals are sold. Avoid consumption of raw or undercooked animal products. Handle raw meat, milk or animal organs with care, to avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods, as per good food safety practices. Ensure regular hand washing with soap and potable water after touching animals and animal products; avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with hands; and avoid contact with sick animals or spoiled animal products.
  • Travellers with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing and wash hands).
  • Health practitioners should provide travellers with information to reduce the general risk of acute respiratory infections, via travel health clinics, travel agencies, conveyance operators and at points of entry. Travellers should self-report if they feel ill.
  • If you have mild respiratory symptoms and no travel history to or within China, carefully practice basic respiratory and hand hygiene and stay home until you are recovered, if possible.
