What a resounding success we had at Sabie Bowling Club on the Heritage Day National Holiday… More outstanding as a major Bowling Club in Nelspruit had to abandon the holding of a major tournament due to lack of interest, and the Lowveld Men’s and Ladies Fours Tournaments attracted the paltry sum of 5 teams between the two very prestigious events.
Whilst the late decision to hold Inter-Provincial Competitions over the weekend before the Kees Barnhoorn did cause some concern, the decision to go ahead by the Sabie Committee was fully justified.
36 Lawn Bowlers entered to play in this annual event, so we had a full green playing Trips, over two matches, one before, and the other after lunch. What was pleasing was that we had Bowlers from seven different clubs represented, as well as the host club.
But, this was about more than just about a couple of games of bowls. The whole day had some very significant, and poignant moments, as our benefactor for the day, Mrs Dawn Barnhoorn, was made an Honorary Life Member of the Club, and the Bowling Green was named “The Barnhoorn Green”, to honour a couple of dedicated bowlers. Kees and Dawn Barnhoorn, who had been President of the Club no fewer than 9 times between them. A delicious, but leisurely lunch, was lit up by the presence of Koos and Janine Barnhoorn and son, and some old members, including Adriaan and Anneke Rouvoet, Hans Koetsier and Anna and Kayo McKechnie. Unfortunately, ill-health prevented John and Elaine Martens from taking part.
The somewhat wintery weather did not dampen anyone’s spirits, as Raffles and Auctions raised a healthy sum for the Club coffers.
The winning team comprised of three local bowlers, Richard Quinnell, Christa Koetsier and Suzette van der Merwe, with Waterval Boven in second place, just half a point ahead of a mixed Sabie and LVCC Team, skipped by Chris Colverd, who gratefully accepted their third-place money.
Many thanks must go to Dawn Barnhoorn and her family for their generous support, the Committee and members for a wonderful job well done, in organising such a glittering occasion, and to Sabie Country Club for the delicious lunch.
Finally, it was great to see so many bowlers from clubs from far and wide, including Duiwelskloof, Hoedspruit, Waterval Boven, Lydenburg, White River, LVCC and Nelspruit, who joined the local members.
