An astounding amount of R34 000 was raised for Cansa during the SANLAM/Cansa Golf Day arranged by the Pilgrim’s Rest Golf Club on July 13.
This amount represents an average of R1000 from each of the 34 players who joined in the competition – from as far as Malelane. Once all the players had completed their 18 holes and enjoyed a meal, it was nearly dark when the prize-giving started.
However, this was not a normal prize-giving. With the very dynamic and humorous encouragement of Nico Cross, Regional Representative of SANLAM, the fund-raising started in earnest.
There were random fines, like for interrupting the proceedings by talking. Winners had to dig into their pockets for payment for the privilege of receiving their prizes. Many lucky bidders paid sums vastly above the value for the items on auction. However, there was much fun and laughter as the golfers took it in the spirit of contributing towards a good cause.
Pilgrim’s Rest club members George Jenkins and Bennie Kruger took first and second places respectively and Johan Meintjies from Malelane finished third.
From this year, SANLAM is no longer sponsoring the SANLAM-CANSA golf challenge as in the past – there will no longer be regional playoffs and a final at Sun City. However, most of the golf clubs, including Pilgrim’s Rest Golf Club,
