Three poachers were apprehended by the Phoenix K9 team near Bergvliet on Wednesday, June 5th and handed over to the Sabie SAPS.
Captain Swanepoel said that they found the vehicle in the plantation and on closer inspection, saw that there was no-one in the vehicle. “The engine was still warm, so we decided to hide further away to see what was going on. After some time, we saw the vehicle approaching and we stopped them. The three men had rifles with them,” Captain Swanepoel said.
After the suspects were apprehended, the vehicle was searched. Two rifles, a 303 and .22, were confiscated by the SAPS and the vehicle impounded. The Phoenix team also found a gravid bushbuck ewe in the boot of the vehicle. The suspects are charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as poaching.
Sabie SAPS Successes
In a recent housebreaking and theft cases – Tweefontein, Mount Anderson and the armed robbery in Klein Sabie – suspects were arrested and the stolen firearms confiscated. In a team effort between the Sabie police and the forensic team, the fingerprints and other evidence confirmed the identity of the suspects.
