Sometimes after a long sickbed, it may be a release for the person suffering, but still unexpected and painful for those left behind. We do not know the day of tomorrow.
Are you ready to die? I am not only speaking spiritually but about your responsibilities like having a valid will and testament? Are all your affairs in order? You can leave your family scrambling to make arrangements—or calmly executing your wishes. People often put more thought into preparing for their family vacation than planning for the end-of-life experience we all must have.
One of the most heart-breaking scenarios to watch is when the family does not have enough finances for the funeral. For the nominal amount monthly that is less than a movie or eating out, you can get a funeral policy that will take all the pressure off your loved ones. Make sure that you get one, please! We always think there is more time… we can never be sure.
The reality is that it is important to broach the subject of death, including your loved one’s preferences for end-of-life care and funeral arrangements, while they are still alive. Important information of preference to discuss would be like burial or cremation? Ensure that your end-of-life documents (life and burial policies) are in order and that the family knows where it is.
Talk about your fears, make peace with everyone, and don’t wait till they are not there anymore. Express your love and appreciation, because tomorrow may be too late. How many times have we heard and said the words: “If only…?” I am not depressed, but the Lord is really laying it on my heart to warn the people that it is important, your days on earth are numbered, and only He knows when your last one on earth will be.
Discuss important decisions like organ donation; do you know how your family and loved ones feel about it? Some families have ripped apart after the death of a loved one because there were no clear instructions about the late person’s wishes.
Just as Jesus made provision for His mother by entrusting her care to the disciple John, let your loved one know that the surviving family members will be taken care of. Spiritually, are you sure what will happen to you if you should die? Do you have peace in your heart that should the angel of Death come for you, that you are ready? It also may be your last opportunity to help your loved one meet their Creator, telling them about Jesus and His love, or for yourself to get the peace that surpasses the mind, to know that you are saved!
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39 KJV)
Please don’t wait, do it soon!
