Shalom Christian School, in Graskop, held their prize-giving ceremony on 30th November at the Graskop Outreach Church Hall. The ceremony carried sentimental value, as it also marked the school’s twentieth anniversary.
The guests, consisting of parents, grandparents, former students and staff as well as friends of Shalom, were treated to heartfelt performances by learners of different grades, who displayed their knowledge and understanding of Christian principles, as taught by the school, through memorized Scripture passages, dance and drama.
The ceremony was directed by Chris and Jackie van der Burgh, who was part of the founder members of Shalom Christian School in 1998. They handed out trophies, certificates and presents to the learners.
Each child received a certificate for the Christian Character Traits displayed by them throughout the year e.g.: Diligence, perseverance, kindness, honesty, courageous, etc.” It is important to speak the values and character of Jesus over the children because they start living according to those values,” said the principal, Mr Chris van der Burgh.
The agenda included items such as Entrepreneurship winners, Alumni word of encouragement (by Mari Wasserman and Willemien Pinchen), a brilliant slide show compiled by Chris Jnr and Lindie-Rene van der Burgh, line dancers, Pastor Hein and the guitar group, to name but a few.
The learners were awarded certificates or trophies based on subject performance, Scripture memory, penmanship, Word Building, Science, Social Studies, English, Arts & Crafts, and Math and reading skills.
Mienkie (former learner) said that the teachers and staff of Shalom Christian School, have imparted long-lasting principles which have helped each learner to become a better person. She read out a wonderful message from one of the previous learners, Kayla Goodwin, currently working in Hong Kong. “You taught us that it doesn’t matter where you are going as long as you know Who you are following. Thank you for starting Shalom Christian School, so that kids can be touched and moulded,” Kyla wrote in her message.
Pastor Phil Robson (Living Waters Christian Church) added his word of encouragement to Chris, Jackie and the entire Shalom staff. “It’s a privilege to have watched Shalom grow in the past twenty years, the development of the school and the sacrifice by Chris and Jackie. They’ve invested in young lives. Even though there were some challenging times, they kept their faith in God and their chins up,” said Pastor Robson.
In conclusion, Principal Chris thanked the parents for the support and involvement in their children’s school activities. He said that the school has big plans for the future.
“A huge thank you to all Shalom learners, past and present, and to their family members who are here with us to celebrate God’s faithfulness. I would like to thank the entire Shalom staff as well. It’s difficult for us to say goodbye to our Grade 7 learners, but we know you will carry the torch and let your light shine. Sometimes it’ll be difficult and sometimes it’ll be exciting, but the main thing is that you know the truth, just live it!” said Sir Chris.
Some guests walked away with exciting prizes, during random draws held throughout the ceremony. The sponsors and role players who made the event possible included Pastor Johan and Petro Cronje-Graskop Outreach Church, Mr and Mrs Calitz-AEE representatives, Raymond and Shirley Emmerick and Gail Engelbrecht-Spar Graskop, Harries Pancakes, Delagoa, Sherries Lodge, Africa Silks, York Timbers, Swadini Aventura Resort, Floreat Hotel-Sabie, Devine @ the View-Graskop, Franco Swanepoel.
