When Sabie Poles attended the annual Hoedspruit BUCO golf supplier’s day, they chose France as their country to represent. What would the day be without the well-known mime?
A mime or mime artist is a person who uses mime (no sound or talking) as a theatrical medium or as a performance art. Miming involves acting out a story through body motions. In earlier times, in England, such a performer would typically be referred to as a mummer, mum meaning silent. Mime is considered one of the earliest mediums of self-expression. With the mask concealing their identity, the performers could ridicule any aspect of society, i.e.: On the day they mimicked the golfers teeing off. (Information from Wikipedia).
Sabie residents Emmanuel Theko (24) and Basian did a splendid job of entertaining golfers on hole 10, as part of Sabie Poles theme. Marina Daniel of Sabie Poles said: “They did a superb job; considering that this was their first gig, they are naturals. The golfers really enjoyed it. They entertained us and I would recommend them to anyone that would like to use them for functions. They are young and innovative and definitely have the potential to become professional mime artists. “
“It was the first time that myself and Basian were used as mimes. We learned a new art form, and are looking forward to doing many more such events. This opportunity will hopefully open up a means of generating an income, and bring joy to others,” said Emmanuel. “If you are an experienced mime that would be willing to coach us, we will appreciate it a lot.”
Many people associate mime with French culture. However, mime is an ancient art that dates back to the early Greeks and Romans. It was in France, though, where mime flourished. It became so popular that mime schools were established throughout France, and a great tradition of French mimes soon followed.
