Jastice Mashego, a young man from Pilgrim’s Rest and a professional golfer, has taken up a position as resident golf coach at the Club Med Bintan Island. Mashego has been a professional golfer since he first qualified for the 2016 Big Easy Sunshine Tour.
Mashego flew out to Singapore on July 19, from where he travelled for just under an hour by ferry to the scenic Bintan Island in Indonesia. The picturesque 27-hole golf course where he will be coaching is set right on the ocean and was designed by Gary Player.
“Scared,” was Mashego’s first reaction when asked how he feels about his adventure. He followed up by saying that he was looking forward to the opportunity. “I will be joining the Asian tour while I’m there,” he explained. “It’s one of the toughest tournaments to be in so I will be getting good experience.”
Mashego appeared to be least concerned about the actual job of coaching. He explained that teaching golf was not a tough job as he had been doing it for years. He was appointed as a coach by the SA Golf Development Board in 2014. He had been coaching youth at the Golf Academy at the Pilgrim’s Rest Golf Club and also had clients in Lydenburg and Sabie.
Mashego started playing golf seriously at the age of 12 and at 16 was selected to the u18 and u23 Mpumalanga teams. Until he joined the professional circuit he was selected to Lowveld and Mpumalanga teams on numerous occasions. He was the Mpumalanga Junior Player of the year in 2008 and Mpumalanga Player of the year in 2012.
