Two grade R Woodlands School learners, Mckayla White and Wenzi Masilele, attained the third place nationally for grade R in the individual categories of the 2017 Maths Athletics Olympiad. The exam was written in December 2017 throughout the country. Out of 15 000 students which sat for the examinations, two Woodlands learners were amongst the top achievers.
“It shows that the level of math’s literacy at Woodlands School is competitive because they managed to obtain the third position countrywide. The school is proud of their performance and we are going to implement other strategic methods to create interest from an early age. One such an endeavor is the Maths Club. It is held at Woodlands school every Friday from 13:00 to 13:30.
We have already introduced mathematical games and other mathematics competitions in order to improve and maintain the performance level of the learners. Learners respond well; they are happy and like the subject to such an extent that they ask for more time. We shall work on it so that we can meet the demand of the learners,” said Victor Mukundu, Woodlands mathematics teacher and co-coordinator.
The two learners were awarded certificates and Sharp calculators for them to use at school.
