Teaching is one of the most important professions in the country, and as such it was duly celebrated “African Oscars” style by Penreach on November 25.
Gracing the red-carpet at this stylish occasion were the most important guests of the day – over 800 pre-school, primary school and high school teachers from across Mpumalanga. The event is held in recognition of the efforts by all teachers and Early Childhood Development practitioners that attend the Penreach Teacher Development Workshops over the course of the year.
The awards were also a musical celebration as friends of Penreach and Penryn saluted the commitment these teachers have made toward achieving educational excellence. Among the distinguished guests were Mr Sandile Mabuza, son of the late Dr Enos Mabuza, as well as Messrs Paul Harris (Rand Merchant Bank and FirstRand founder), Jacques Celliers (CEO of FNB and Chair of the Penryn Trust), and James Aling (Managing Director of Halls and Chair of Penryn Council). Commenting on the experience, Harris said, “I always leave Penreach with a renewed hope for the future of our country”.
The winners of the awards for ECD Centre of the year, Teacher of the Year and School of the Year, were awarded amid great fanfare and musical accompaniment of the Casterbridge Music Development Academy’s (CMDA) band, Leggogote and the CMDA Marimba group. The winning school and ECD Centre had made great strides in meeting curriculum standards, as well as the teacher of the year presenting evidence of a stimulating teaching and learning environment.
Penreach CEO, Mr Andile Ncontsa announced the launch of the Penreach Artreach programme in 2018 as part of the Penreach and Penryn strategy to develop all children holistically. The combined Marimba and Djembe performance from the CMDA and Penryn College had the crowd on their feet in no time.
Concluding the ceremony, Sportreach hosted the finals of the 2017 Hockey Development Tournament. Penreach wishes to thank our prize sponsors including Sappi, Knittex, A2A Kapano Incorporated, and Manganese Metal Co. Sportreach tournament sponsors were Camp & Gas Nelspruit, Easy Hire Events and Trevor Smith Sports Benoni.
