Join the fun at the National Gold Panning Championships

Looking for something different to do during the upcoming school holidays?  Look no further than the annual National Gold Panning Championships being held on October 4-7 in Pilgrim’s Rest.

In a gold panning competition, between 5 and 12 small gold nuggets are seeded into a 20Kg bucket of sand and the winner is the one who can pan out the most nuggets in the shortest time. This is a sport where the whole family can participate in individual, team and various fun events.  You can join in the fun of the championships even if you have never panned before, including in beginner classes open only to those who have never competed in Nationals before.  Practice under the guidance of experienced panners can be arranged for the days preceding the championships. The gold panning school is being held every Friday afternoon at the panning site across from the caravan park, or in the beginner classes at the Mac-Mac Gold Panning Club championships being held from September 30-October 1.

Even if you don’t participate in the Championships you can come and watch our own world-class panners in action as well as enjoy the entertainment after the day’s competition.  Registration takes place on October 4, followed by a street parade and opening ceremony.  On the days following there are also the traditional wheelbarrow race and pub crawl, where you can discover the variety of pubs in Pilgrim’s Rest and meet up with the -often eccentric- locals.
