The Pinnocio Pre-Primary in Sabie, visited the local hospital to explore the newly refurbished state-of-the art health care facility. Teachers Nicole Els, Linah Sebothoma and Melissa Mitchell accompanied the children.
They received a warm welcome from Ronny Mnisi (Medical Manager, student nurses and hospital staff. They were taken on a tour around the hospital sections such as; casualty, chemist, physiotherapist, dietician , x-ray, paediatric ward, etc.
The student nurses assumed playful roles as patients in each section visited. This aided the pre-schoolers to easily grasp daily operations at the hospital in a language they understand.
Els explained that the tour was part of a weekly theme and this time the focus was on health care and the hospital. “The idea is to encourage the children not to be scared,” said Els. “They enjoyed themselves and they needed the real assurance that the hospital is not such a bad place. We visit different places and sometimes professionals come to us to educate the children. Our next theme is road safety.”
The children were taught, amongst other things, eating healthy, cleanliness, and oral care. Mnisi commented that the hospital was honoured to receive a visit from Pinnocio Pre-Primary. “It’s encouraging to have the ones for a visit. We grew up very scared of the hospital. I hope one of them will assist us in this hospital one day,” said Mnisi.
