Middelvlei Wines has been running a promotion of their new Rooster range of wines with GPS News readers exclusively over the last three months. Although this promotion is now coming to a close, many of our readers have been the lucky winners of a box of wine which included two bottles each of Rooster Merlot, Rooster Sauvignon Blanc and Rooster Shiraz.

Apart from the competition element GPS News also ran articles introducing our readers to the owners of Middelvlei: the Momberg family. From the winemaker, Tinnie Momberg, chief executive officer Jeanneret Momberg, to the patriarch of the Momberg family, Stil Jan. Each of these individuals plays a critical role in the ongoing success of Middelvlei Wines both on a national and international front.

Now our readers have the opportunity to meet Ben Momberg in person when he attends the Hoedspruit Wine and Food Show on Saturday, June 10. Momberg will be exhibiting the entire Middelvlei wine range to visitors to the show from 10:00 to 17:00. Why not take a drive out that weekend and meet one of the most prominent wine estate owners in the Cape?

Momberg visits the Lowveld twice annually to expand their client base in the area. “These are not solely about making money,” says Momberg. “It is also to develop and establish good relationships with lodges, distributors and bottle stores in the area.”

“There is this misconception about selling wine that it is a quick way to make money. However, this is not true. It takes a lot of work to build relationships with wine potential buyers before the sales begin to take place. It can be difficult to get into the lodges. The lodges want, in general, to meet and deal only with the owner or the winemaker of a wine estate. What I have found in the Lowveld in particular, is that people here want conduct business face to face and not just over the phone or via email.”

Momberg’s Mpumalanga trips usually last seven days and he visits approximately 30 towns during this period. “This may look like a hectic work schedule to most people, but to me it is enjoyable and more like a holiday than work.”
